They are all illnesses triggered by prolonged exposure to chemicals and allergens in the indoor air. Many offices, schools, hospitals and homes constantly expose their occupants to hazardous conditions that make them chronically ill.
Sources of indoor air pollution include formaldehyde, pesticides, tobacco products, cleaning chemicals, solvents, personal-care products, photocopy machines, etc. Since World War II, over 70,000 different chemicals are routinely used on a daily basis. These chemicals send toxic vapors into the air stream. It is quite alarming when you consider the number of chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis - and when these chemicals combine (synergistic effect), they are often more toxic in combination.
Formaldehyde is one of the most prevalent chemicals and is considered among the most hazardous to human health. It is one of a large family of chemical compounds called "volatile organic compounds" or VOC's. The term "volatile" means that the compounds vaporize, that is, become a gas at normal room temperatures. It is a colorless, strong-smelling gas that can cause watery eyes, burning sensation in the eyes, nose and throat, nausea, coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, skin rashes and allergic reactions. It is a known cause of cancer.
Formaldehyde is used to make other chemicals, building materials and household products. Exposure comes from: (1) The glue or adhesive in pressed wood products (particleboard, hardwood plywood, and medium density fiberboard (2) The preservatives in some paints, coatings and cosmetics (3) The coating that provides permanent press quality to fabrics and draperies (4) The finish used to coat paper products and (5) Certain insulation materials (urea-formaldehyde foam and fiberglass insulation). Formaldehyde levels in the indoor air depend mainly on what is releasing the formaldehyde, the temperature, humidity level and the air exchange rate.
Carpeting also emits volatile organic compounds, as do products that accompany carpet installation. Styrene butadiene latex is used in flooring adhesives and carpet backing -contributing to indoor air pollution. Air fresheners (both the spray type and wick type) are air pollutants. They do nothing to improve the quality of the air. Instead they add a wide range of components including naphthalene, xylene, formaldehyde and phenol. Other ingredients include zinc phenolsulfonate, pyrethrin, piperonyl vutoxide, trichloromonofluromethane, methylene chloride, p-dichloroenzene, etc. Several of these components are known carcinogens and others have a wide range of immediate and long-term effects on vital organs.

The first place we installed Odor Stop was the air conditioning unit for one of the control towers. It is working great, no more kitchen odors in the tower.
The second installation was in the Purafil filtration system in AHU 1 & 2 in the Delta Airlines garage building. The Odor Stop is a great replacement for the Purafil filters. The cost for replacement was comparable, but the huge cost savings comes in the following year when the Odor Stop is reactivated - not replaced. The Odor Stop will cut our expense in half! I was curious about a product that was not merely a cover up aerosol spray, but was reusable and environmentally friendly. With skepticism, I agreed to try the product in our soiled utility area. This room is the holding area for linen awaiting transport to the laundry.
Since installation, the odor associated with soiled linen has been absorbed by this wonderful product. The smell in this area has been eliminated. We have since used the product with spills that occur hospital wide.
The one time fee for the purchase of this product is money well spent. Due to the reusable feature of Odor Stop, we will realize a cost saving in terms of deodorant sprays that we were purchasing in the past. The Odor Stop® filter contains a proprietary zeolite mineral blend enclosed in a breathable pouch. The pouch is housed inside an aluminum bracket. As air moves though the filter, odors, pollutants, allergens and gases are adsorbed by the zeolite minerals giving you improved indoor air quality.
Commercial Air Conditioners (A/C)
The Odor Stop® filter is installed behind the air intake filter. 10 and 20-lb. filters are available. A 10-lb. filter can handle up to 2.5 tons of A/C. A 20-lb. filter can handle up to 5 tons of A/C. The dimensions of the 10-lb. filter are: L15" X H12" X W3". The dimensions of the 20-lb. filter are: L30" X H12" X W3". To determine the number of filters required, first check the tonnage of the A/C and then check the dimensions of the air intake vent. If the air intake vent can't support the 20-lb. filter, use 10-lb. filter. Divide the tonnage of the A/C by 2.5 if using the 10-lb. filter and by 5 if using the 20-lb. filter and round up to the next whole number to determine the number of filters required.

PTAC (Portable Thermal Air Conditioner)
PTAC units are commonly found in hotel and motel rooms. They provide a guest with heating and A/C. The Odor Stop® PTAC filter installs underneath the PTAC unit. The dimensions of the PTAC unit are L23" X H4.5" X W3". One PTAC filter is required for every PTAC unit. .
